Carbon a dirty word at waste depots (14/07/12)

MELBOURNE streets could be strewn with dumped rubbish as the carbon tax bites, waste removal companies warn.

Tipping costs at waste depots will increase by up to $25 a tonne, some councils estimate.

The warning comes as the impact of the carbon tax starts to sink in to the business community.

Herald Sun investigation shows firms from laundries to retailers say they will have to pass on the cost.

Warwick Brown, managing director of Princes Laundry Services, said the business had no choice.

"The most difficult thing for us has been understanding the commercial impact of the tax," Mr Brown said.

Paul Rositani, of Air Dome Heating and Cooling, said the carbon tax already was adding significant costs to airconditioners.

"On average, for common residential airconditioners, you are looking at about $150 extra for ducted cooling and around $80 per split system unit," he said.

Waste disposal operator Hugh Thomas said he believed illegal dumping of rubbish would increase as a result of carbon tax price rises.

"Dumping rubbish in dark alleyways in industrial areas has been an alternative for some people," he said.

"As it becomes more expensive, costs can become prohibitive - we are living in an extremely cost-sensitive environment."

Another operator, Troy Armitage, feared some small waste removal companies could resort to dumping to keep their own costs down.

Councils across Melbourne fear the impact of carbon tax on waste disposal.

Greater Dandenong Council engineering services director Bruce Rendall said it would have to pay $600,000 to $750,000 extra to dispose of waste each year.

Russell Zimmerman, of the Australian Retailers Association, said landlords were passing on increases in electricity, water, waste management and council rates.

Coffee shop owner Howard Cheng said his costs had gone up, but he had not passed them on to customers for fear of losing business.

"My suppliers' costs have increased. They say it is because of the carbon tax, but I don't know if it actually is," Mr Cheng said.

"Right now I am staying away from increasing my prices, but eventually I will."

Ambulance Victoria is yet to decide whether increased costs will be passed.

Fremantle City Council in WA has become the first council in Australia to pass a local law banning single use plastic bags. (February 15, 2012)

The law comes as a result of a unanimous council vote that turned a long-standing policy, dating from 2005, into law. So far, plastic bags have been banned in the South Australia, the NT and the ACT. These bans cover single use, non-biodegradable plastic bags.

Mobile Skips – The skip bin revolution!

You throw it, we tow it!!

Established in 2006, Mobile Skips was developed by Cameron Griffiths after using a similar product in America. Cameron identified a gap in his own backyard for a similar system in the Australian market and Mobile Skips was born!

Mobile Skips provides customers with a skip bin service that is both easy and convenient. With the increase of councils closing down a large amount of local tips and the issue of personal rubbish bins constantly over flowing around the streets, Mobile Skips has developed a service that helps to eradicate these problems- They bring the skip to you. They deliver the bin directly to your home, your apartment or your office building and then all you have to do is fill it up with your rubbish.  The boys from Mobile Skips will then come and pick it up from you and take it away and dispose of the rubbish for you. A simple, easy and hassle free way to throw out your rubbish.

Mobile Skips key focus is providing their customers with a high level of service and a quality product. They understand that skip bin hire has a history of poor quality service and rude employees and therefore they aim to provide a rubbish removal system with a high level of service in a smart, clean and convenient way. By providing skip bins on trailers, this allows the customer the option of moving the Mobile Skip around to suit their needs.
